NEW DELHI: Micromax has emerged as the top Indian handset brand being used in India, followed by Lava, Intex, Karbonn and Spice in order of ranking, according to a report by CMR.
The data collected as of March 2017 for the installed base of mobile handsets in India depicted the usage of top 3 Indian mobile brands in different states where Micromax is the most preferred brand in 12 states followed by Lava in 2 states and Intex in 2 states as well.
However, Lava is the second most preferred brand in 10 states and third most preferred brand in 5 states. In states including Delhi, Mahrashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, Micromax has a lead over other other brands.
Celkon, which has its headquarters in Hyderabad, has also made it to the list by becoming the most used brand in Andhra Pradesh. Dhoot family-run Videocon has also bagged a spot in the list by becoming the third most preferred brand in the state of Odisha.
“Rankings have a highly positive correlation with the years of operation. This clearly hints that market development is a function of time and interim measures like online only, etc. don’t yield results in the long term,” said Faisal Kawoosa, Principal Analyst and GM, CMR.
” The Indian brands must pace to regain, as new entrants are picking up the order fast,” added Kawoosa.
While many Indians continue to use Indian mobile brands, yet the Indian handset makers lag in terms of market share where companies like Samsung and Xiaomi have 22% and 14% market share respectively according to recent data by Canalys.
The leading Indian mobile brand Micromax over the time has lost considerable market share to Chinese players such as Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi.
