NTPC sells surplus power on India Energy Exchange; NHPC, NLC to follow

The Economic Times

India's largest power producer NTPC has started trading surplus electricity on power exchange.

Other central public sector undertakings NHPC and Neyveli Lignite Corporation are also expected to start selling their surplus power capacity on the exchange.

NTPC's has sold un-requisitioned surplus power from four thermal generating stations -- Vidhyanchal, Unchahar, Rihand and Dadri Power -- at India Energy Exchange (IEX), the exchange said in a statement.

Un-requisitioned surplus power is that which state power distribution companies back out from purchasing. The central generating stations are scheduled on a day-ahead basis. Usually, generating stations offering cheaper power are fully scheduled by states. In case the state does not wish to utilise the power, the power remains un-requisitioned and unsold.

The National Tariff Policy issued in January 2016 allowed the central generating companies to trade such power.
